But it doesn't have to be. With 2.0 we can fairly trivially ensure that older
macros have the various options inserted in them and that they are compiled/run
in the 'incompatible' ;-) mode - and we can transition to compatibility by
default for anything 2.0+.

At least - delaying that transition ( to defaulting to a compatible basic ) is
only going to cause more problems longer term - surely ?

That is my point - not that we should clobber the default by default, but that
we should also do the <-> file-format work. Sure - I also patch the
'CompatibilityMode' flag too [ FWIW ;-] I didn't attach that part - clearly the
same issue applies.
