Hi,

I've seen a number of (very old/locked?) threads regarding problems with
referencing equations in master files using the FN+F3 feature, but all the
threads seem to go around in circles, pointing to duplicate threads that never
seem to get resolved! If anyone can offer any more conclusive advice I would be
very appreciative. I've made a number of observations:

Equations created in subdocuments using the FN+F3 function that are formatted to
include the chapter number lose this formatting in the master file. Eg equations
1.1, and 1.2 from chapter 1 become equations 1 and 2 in the master file and
equations 2.1 and 2.2 from chapter 2 become equations 3 and 4 in the master file
etc. I believe this was a similar problem regarding figure numbers, but that
this has been resolved? (please correct me if neccessary). But this remains a
problem with equations.

While annyoying, I have found a way to overcome this to an extent. The field
references cannot be edited from the master file because they are read-only.
However, if you create another equation (FN+F3) in a writable part of the master
file (eg in the header, or in additional text), this can be formatted to include
the chapter number, and can be applied over the whole document. This tends to
screw things up for a moment, but you will notice the equations in rest of the
(read-only) subdocuments change from 1,2,3,4 to 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2 etc (as in
this example). Then you can delete the additional equation you made in the
master file, and retain the numbering.

Not ideal, but this fix seemed to work *OK* for a while, until I came back to
the master file and did an Update after working on a subdocument. The formatting
remains 1.1 etc, but now some of the references are wrong.

Eg in chapter 2 (subdocument 2), I had equation 2.1 - 2.10, each referenced
correctly somewhere in its text. In the master file, the equations are
reproduced exactly with the correct numbering and the correct formatting (ie 2.1
- 2.10), but some of the references changed erroneously. In subdocument 2 I say:
"blah blah blah, see equation (2.1)", where (2.1) is a cross-reference to
equation 2.1, it is 'mistranscribed' into the master file as "blah blah blah,
see equation (2.6)", where (2.6) is a cross-reference to equation 2.6 and
because this is a master file, this reference cannot be edited.

But beyond this problem with master documents, sometimes the references screw up
in the subdocument as well. Sometimes when I load up the subdocument, the
references to equation 2.2 link to equation 2.6. (Note, equation 2.2 still had
the correct 'caption' of (2.2) next to it, just that the reference was wrong)
When I edit the field, it clearly wants to point to 2.6, so I selected 2.2 and
updated the reference. But it did not update correctly and just pointed to 2.6
again, still displaying 2.6. When I edited the field again, it had reset back to
2.6 again - ie, I could not update this field to 2.2 no matter what I tried.
Even when inserting new cross-reference to equation 2.2 they would still display
as (and link to) 2.6. Creating new references and editing references to other
equations worked fine, and the only way to get it to work was to delete equation
2.2 completely and insert another with a new reference.

Despite getting the references finally sorted in the subdocument, Updating the
master file screwed up the links again (the equation numbers remained correct,
just the cross-referencing).

Now unfortunately this is a fairly unrepeatable problem because it seems to
occur rather randomly. When I saved the corrected subdocument and reloaded, this
time all the references screwed up and as did all the equation numbers (the
equation numbers before had been OK). All the equation numbers (2.1 - 2.10) were
replaced with "(Number range Text)" and all the referenes were replaced with
"Text". Clicking on *some* of these "Text"s still linked to their corresponding
"(Number range Text)", but most were screwy - none of them had any numbering in
the cross-references.

Any thoughts? Is this a side effect of my dodgy numebring fix, or have others
had this problem? How have you overcome it? Issues with numbering in master
docuements is fairly well documented, but having also had these rather random
and unrepeatable errors involving subdocuments I wondered whether this is new?

Note, this problem occured with both the new security patched version of OOc
1.1.4 and pre-patched.

Many thanks
