I have downloaded OOo_1.9.104 and now it works for me too, so that is excellent.
Thanks to the other people who tried it out as well.
The reason I didn't try a newer version before was that I steer clear of
third-party RPM packages, because there is always a danger of confusing the
dependencies for SuSE packages. I had to work out how to use rpm2cpio and cpio
before I was happy installing a test version.
