It appears to be related to the column spanning (aka cell merging) function. js181096's table uses a span on the bottom column. In order to eliminate the chance of some historical data corruption from an eariler OOo rev, I created a new, but similar table from scratch in 1.9m104. No joy. If there are 5 spanned columns, OOo seems to want to insert 6 new columns rather than the 1 requested.
