This issue is invalid. What you encountered is a feature.

As metioned before, the initial language is set to en_US. The dictionary for
en_US doesn't contain the word "gauge" thus it is marked as misspelled. (and
because it is not known, it cannot appear in the proposed spelling-list)

When you run the spellcheck and tell it to check the word, it searches in the
available dictionaries. If you check the dialog carefully, you'll notice that
the language switches from English (USA) to british english. The
british-dictionary contains the word, thus it is correct.
To apply the change of the language, you have to replace the word (it will then
be marked with en_GB. If you dismiss the dialog without clicking "replace", the
word will still be marked as "en_US" and thus still be marked as misspelled on
subsequent runs of the spellchecker.

You can have the spellcheck search in all dictionaries autmatically when you
chek "check in all languages" in Tools|Options -> language-settings ->
linguistic

There's no issue with the actual functionality of the spellchecker. -> invalid.
