It is not a communication problem from my part... I already realized that you
cannot display the characters when Arial is used.

But some remarks first:
* You're not using 2.0 beta but 1.1.2 -> correcting version
* You're using a modified version of OOo (modified by your distributor) - it may
behave differently than the original
* You're using RedHat/Fedora that is known to have few high-quality fonts by
default.

Simple: I have fonts installed that contains hebrew and are common enough so OOo
knows them as replacement (glyph-fallback). In fact, I have Arial installed.
(Real Arial, not a faked one that claims it is Arial).

But as mentioned before: You can use Font-Replacement (and not the
"baisc-fonts"-setting) to use another font than Arial.
