Hmm. This will work for the Gnome Desktop - but if Fedora comes with other desktop-environments these may not be as happy... (The same for RH4) Regarding the "amount-of-work": All of these solutions are not a big deal. But 3) probably is the worst: how would you tell the user that he should take the freedesktop package instead? RPM only tells "unsatisfied dependencies, package <name> <version> is needed" or something similar. AFAIK you cannot add an explanative message....
