It is unlikely that the password was corrupted. More likely is the case that
either simply the password is wrong or the whole file was damaged.
In any case: There is no way to recover a lost password except by the means of
brute-force. (like the macro you mentioned).
If you can exclude some characters, you can speed-up the execution of the macro.
But without the file or some way to reproduce the problem I'll have to close
this issue as invalid, sorry.
