In bug 52125 (duplicate of this bug), the comment was made that this would not
be handled as a defect as it should match the display tip and hardreturns can be
inserted with Enter. I would like to appeal that decision as from the point of
view of someone who works with a lot of notes (in both Word and OOo), it IS a
defect. Several reasons why:
1. If the original author didn't insert hard returns throughout his/her note to
match the box width, then other users have to scroll sideways to read the note,
which is extremely frustrating. Documents created in MS Word won't have hard
returns inserted for legibility because MS Word has word wrap in its note box.
That means that any notes originally created in MS Word documents will be very
hard to read in OOo2. I work with a LOT of documents in a work-flow situation,
and I can't express how frustrating this is. None of my collegues would switch
to OOo for this very reason alone.
2. Even if the original user creates the document in OOo and does put hard
returns in the note, if the note is saved as DOC format, those hard returns are
stripped. Which means that for anyone else reading the document, the note is one
big line again. Of course we could just save it in Open Document format--but
since many people use MS Word, many folks are forced to use the DOC format if
their documents are to be compatible.
3. Viewing the note with the tooltip has several limitations/problems:
a. On a very long note, the tooltip will truncate the note, so you have to
click on the note to read the rest of it.
b. If two (or more) notes are side by side, the tooltip will only display
the first one. The only way to see any of the others is to click on the first
note, and then press the arrow key to get to the others. Since the only way to
read them is in the Note window, not having word-wrap means again scrolling back
and forth to read a very long line.
Could this please be fixed for the next release? Thanks. And thanks for all the
hard work on such a great open-source program!
