What I can say about reproducing this problem is, get a 128MB RAM machine, run
RH9, open a WindowMaker desktop in JAPANESE mode. This will use enough memory
to make things dangerous (system is a bit more responsive without the Japanese
input system Canna etc. running).

If you want to run Firefox and some other things at the same time that will
also be useful. Currently for translation purposes I wuold have xpdf, OOo,
wine jwpce.exe (a kanji dictionary), and firefox running. But I think the
problem will come up just with Impress running and 2 powerpoint files of around
1-2 MB each, in other words a common size, and needing two open so you can copy
from one and paste to the other.

I think there may be memory leaks which exacerbate the problem but can't tell.

Anyway, if you copy/paste between the impress windows and try to edit one of
them (like I do, actually type lots of text into various text boxes, navigate,
zoom, etc.) the program will crash! I have not seen this to be dependent at
all on the file type or content.

My point is that if OOo explicitly must have 512MB or more RAM then you should
say so. But if it is supposed to be able to run in 128MB (even if that is only
maybe 5-10 MB free before the swap/thrash), then OOo should pay a lot more
attention to resource issues. The program should not crash. I don't know if
it already does so, but if you ask it to do an operation that it knows will
crash it due to a lack of enough memory, then it should refuse, and dump the
file to disk.

Last note is that for a long time I ran OOo on a USB1.1 hard disk. Currently
I'm running off the main hard drive. Anyway I believe this does not have
anything to do with it but if you want to try it this might do something for
you.

I submit that the OOo team does not have enough people using the system on
older hardware. My laptop was computer of the year when I got it, and it may
be underpowered compared to current models, but this is a good situation in
which you want linux and OOo to work on it and shine.
