Spellchecking is connected to the language. So please look, if the language is
set in general in Tools -> Options -> Language Settings -> Language and if the
language is set for the document in Style and Formatting -> Paragraph Styles ->
Default -> Font.
If you are not using English(US), you need to install in addition the dictionary
with File -> Wizards -> Install new dictionaries.
Also replacement is connected to the language. So pleace make sure, that the
additinal word is in the same language as your document.
Because I have no spellcheck problems with beta2 on WinXp, it is probably an
error in the settings.
