The Columbia Plateau included a number of different languages, belonging to
different language families, even before the reservation period. Salish,
Sahaptin, Uto-Aztecan tribes all lived there and pretty much shared a single
culture. The Pacific Northwest is one of the linguistically most complicated
areas of North America during the prehistoric period. California also. That
is prima facie evidence that the Pacific Coast is the site of earliest
settlement for the immigrants from Asia, a fact which is now pretty widely
accepted among prehistorians. The "Ice-free Corridor" hypothesis is now pretty
much dead: RIP.
