Sure I can. We're talking about "botanical Latin", where anything goes.
And anyway, video meliora proboque deteriora sequor, and all that.
I don't even see a consistent usage across the board, anyway. Rafinesque
thought Leiostemon was neuter gender, but everyone decided that Penstemon was
masculine, while Rhodochiton and Dodecatheon are neuter.
