Too true Beth.... The Cooperative extension came up with the idea several years ago and presented it to all the Exhibitors and almost all were more than glad to write off the Plant material and donate it to the Cooperative extension....our local County Extension has been in the process of building a new Office building...with land donated by a local farmer and a goal of $200,000+ $ to build the new facility we're almost there finally, getting the Extension out of a renovated two story house with little to no room for anything but office staff.
The new facility will have classrooms and be host to the Master Gardener Program as well as continued education for area residents. We too know the effects of shrinking funding...the Unifersity of Maine system has been drawing down some on their funding...but this helps defray the cost and cover expenses.... And though a goal of $9,000 doesn't seem much...being at the auction and picking up a tree worth $200 for $45 is a good thing.....
