Thanks Cliff, but I must say administrative duties on Alpine-L require
very little time or effort (notice how quiet it's been on Alpine-L),
typically all I need to do is review and reject about 5-6 spam emails
each week. In contrast, the amount of effort that goes into the forums
such as NARGS or SRGC is much greater, I suspect due to the fact
spammers are attracted to newer forum media (with visual content) like
moths to an open flame.
On the NARGS Forum for example, we have a plugin installed that
automatically blocks spammy registration requests, on average blocking
50-100 such bogus registration requests each and every day. However,
even with that in place, as many as 20 or more bogus registration
requestion requests per week still get through for review.
For each of these, I use another utility that checks the applicant's IP
address, email address, and selected forum username, against 14
internet-based databases of known spammers. Because spammers generate
new email addresses daily, to "give the appearance" of clean non-spammy
credentials for at least a day or two (until they start getting reported
and added to the spam databases), it still takes some effort and time to
vet each registration request to determine if they are really a
legitimate plant person of a nefarious spammer.
I suspect the text-based maillists hold less allure for spammers, and
probably less visibility to the spamming world, thus rarely get hit with
such spamming force as seen in "social media" sites.
