Our local hosta society visited Mary Chastain, a well-known hosta
hybridizer in Ooltewah, Tennessee several years ago, and she told us she
believed
oak tree roots put out substances that inhibited hosta growth. Since almost
all woodlands around here contain oak trees, this might help to explain
the fact that the plants tend to decline in our gardens. I doubt that this
was in any way a scientific observation, just a comment made from her
experience. (My own experience would tend to make me agree with her.)
(All hostas with "Lakeside" in their official names were developed by
Mary, of which there are many.)
