Hi folks, A contribution from an 'alpine' enthusiast.
We regularly hike in the alpine zone of a number of mountain ranges. Whilst we are fortunate to see gentians, saxifrages, androsaces, thlaspis, primulas, soldanellas and all manner of beautiful montane species in these stunning locations, we also see countless species of hardy orchids inhabiting these upland meadows and boulder fields - why should these 'hardy' low-growing perennials be classified as something other than 'alpine' species? Surely they have more claim to this label than many of the less hardy, less 'alpine' species now being grown in troughs, screes, rock gardens and alpine houses? Kindest regards to all, Cliff Booker Whitworth, Rochdale, Lancashire.
