there is a rawmidi test program included in the alsa-lib tarball. (make sure you use it with the -v flag). though maybe you'd prefer to use the alsa sequencer rather than rawmidi. really depends on what you want to do though. (and note that you can always route rawmidi into the alsa sequencer with a virmidi device)
