OK, thanks. That did it. This is what the AC'97 looks like now:

Simple mixer control 'AC'97',0
  Capabilities: pvolume cvolume pswitch
  Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right 
  Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right 
  Limits: Playback 0 - 100 Capture 0 - 100
  Front Left: Playback 0 [0%] [on] Capture 100 [100%] 
  Front Right: Playback 0 [0%] [on] Capture 100 [100%] 

It seems that alsamixer is no longer enough to "mix" the AC'97,
because I had to use amixer instead to raise the "AC'97 Capture"
setting. This is why recording was so quiet. Interestingly, there is a
Capture setting next to the AC'97 but this doesn't seem to do
anything...
