"default" and "rear" are different on the following points:

- "defalut" can be used for more than two channels but
  "front" cannot.  It's a big difference.
- "default" uses plugin so that it accepts all formats/rates, while
   "front" cannot.

But I agree that playing on both channels as default is annoying too.
Maybe we can redefine "defalut" on cards with 4.0/5.1 support to use
only front speakers.
