About a week ago I recompiled my kernel (2.4.7) to include rtc rather
than rtc module. At this time I compiled it optimised for my processor,
also(k6-2 475mHz). At this time, I started having problems in kde with
thrashing that would slow down my system to a dead crawl. I started
looking to kde for the fix, since the problem was not apparent when
using the blackbox wm.
       I finally found that the thrashing was caused by artsd gobbling
up memory in quantum leaps. At the start it used 2864 but after about 4
or 5 minutes it starts increasing memory usage and withing 15 or 20
seconds it is using 186meg of memory and my poor 128meg maching is
thrashing with swap memory. The thrashing lasts for about 45 minutes if
I let it.
       Since this started when I updated the alsa-cvs driver at the same
time, I thought I would ask if anyone else has seen this happen lately?
I use a SBlive soundcard and my kernel sources came from Mandrake source
rpm.
