It is very useful to low-latency apps, or perhaps any app where you need
to control latency. In blocking mode you can also 'time' your
application with the soundcard interrupts i.e. your applications gets
woken up when a certain amount of data, a period, becomes available
for writing (or is ready to be read, in case of recording).
