Yes, I know that - that's why all those config options are commented out.
I included .config to verify that sound was enabled but *no* specific
sound drivers compiled in.

Yes, that's what typing 'make' in the top level directory of the cvs
checkout does.  As I wrote above, I did that too.  The problem is that
none of the snd-card-sb* modules are built, so it is impossible to install
them.  *All* the other modules are built, just not sb*.  I even made a log
of the build process and sent it to this list a while ago.  That log
showed no errors, but the modules were never compiled.
