Doesn't the snddevices (?), not at Linux computer at the
moment :( , create a number of device files for ALSA? I
think its in the alsa-driver package. Perhaps this doesn't
help what you were talking about, but I notice that when I
get file not found errors when trying to open various ALSA
devices, running that script usually fixes things. Sometimes
I have to run it when I change kernels.
