The utils called ac3dec which comes with alsa drivers, should be able to output in digital, if you use the -C option.
Also, the xine media player(xine.sf.net), should be able to output sound from DVDs etc, in digital if you set the passthru option to 1.
Also, in normal operation, you should get SPDIF out, by using alsamixer. Play with the IEC958 settings.
Cheers
James

Subject: [Alsa-devel] sblive! value card/ BA735 speakers

I know this has been asked before, but i can't find any answers in layman's terms. I am a linux newbie. I have an sblive! value soundcard, digital Boston Accoustics BA735  speakers, and Mandrake 8.0. My speakers need a digital signal. How do I make Linux send it? WinME has a digital output only toggle on its soundmixer.

I've read other discussions on the same topic. I've heard talk about various drivers, patches, projects, mixers, docs and mans I couldn't find, and lots of settings I don't know the first thing about changing.
I haven't read anything that sounds like... "this is what worked for me and this is how I did it."

Any help that offers results would be much appreciated,
vincent brown
