I got an ABIT-ST6-RAID based on the Intel 815 step-b chipset, with integrated
i8x0 audio. At first I was using 2.4.16 kernel drivers, but after a while of
playing audio (xmms) the system just froze solid. After this I switched to
Alsa 0.9.0beta10 which unfortuantly also also has this problem, but
fortunately it handles it much more gracefully then the kernel i810_audio
driver. Alsa dumps this to syslog and I can't play sound anyore, but at least
the box doesn't freeze solid.
(dmesg output)
ALSA card-intel8x0.c:294: codec_write 0: semaphore is not ready for register
0x2c
ALSA card-intel8x0.c:294: codec_write 0: semaphore is not ready for register
0x26
ALSA card-intel8x0.c:308: codec_read 0: semaphore is not ready for register
0x26
ALSA card-intel8x0.c:294: codec_write 0: semaphore is not ready for register
0x26
ALSA card-intel8x0.c:294: codec_write 0: semaphore is not ready for register
0x26

and this repeats forever when I'm trying to play sound.

If I were to
/sbin/rmmod snd-pcm-oss snd-mixer-oss snd-card-intel8x0 snd-pcm snd-timer
snd-ac97-codec snd soundcore

and then again to reload the modules
/sbin/modprobe snd-card-intel8x0
/sbin/modprobe snd-mixer-oss
/sbin/modprobe snd-pcm-oss

I get
/lib/modules/2.4.17-pre2/misc/snd-card-intel8x0.o: init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including
invalid IO or IRQ parameters
/lib/modules/2.4.17-pre2/misc/snd-card-intel8x0.o: insmod
/lib/modules/2.4.17-pre2/misc/snd-card-intel8x0.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.17-pre2/misc/snd-card-intel8x0.o: insmod snd-card-intel8x0
failed

This time alsa driver can't even find the card.

This problem seems to also happen with alsa 0.5.12a.

I'm not on the mailing list, but if this is a chronic problem that can't
really be fixed anytime soon could you please let me know? I'll just go and
buy a sound card (I normally don't need one, i just listen to mp3s, so the
onboard audio is very much enough for me)

P.S. if you need more info, I can offer an account on my box for testing....
