Maybe if you record a small section to a PC using the best quality you can. Probably 16 bit at 48Khz, in stereo if the source is stereo. If the source is recorded on two tracks for stereo, extracting voice and removing noise is a lot easier.
Then post that to a web site, so people can download it and then they will have an idea of what type of noise you are trying to get rid off. I have seen whole documents on the web on how to extract voice signals from music. I imagine that the same procedure would work well for your tapes.
