yes, ardour is currently hard coded to use an ASIO-style scheme with
all audio hardware. there are certain chipsets with which this does
not work. the ymfpci is one such chipset. i don't know if that
is the same as your chipset, but it might be.

the archives of this list (and of ardour-dev, where messages about
ardour should be sent) contain an outline of my position with respect
to these cards.

ardour is about to move to using JACK for all i/o. this will move the
problem into JACK's ALSA PCM client/driver, which currently does the
same thing as ardour. i am more amenable to change the JACK code to
support such cards, but still not enthusiastic about it. you are using
badly designed hardware, or more precisely, hardware that was not
designed for use in a DAW. i am willing to accept patches to fix the
behaviour of JACK's ALSA PCM client to work with this class of audio
interface, but i will not write the changes myself. i have better
things to do. you couldn't use ASIO with this card either, and that
would have very definite impact on the performance of Cubase and other
apps if you ran windows or macos on the h/w.
