did the older driver have this problem, too, or is it a new one?

on your board, the headphone control is actually used instead of
master.  it's really dependent on the board.
we can put some quirks for such a board by checking the pci id or
codec id.  could you give the output of lspci -nv of the chip,
the contents of /proc/asound/card0/ac97#0 and
/proc/asound/card0/ac97#0regs ?
