thought i'd report how i got on with the tibook.
ended up using a benh ppc kernel:

i got rid of alsa :( cos it just doesn't seem to be much good on the
pmac yet...least not my tibook (e.g. iffy lineout, volume controls not
really working properly)
instead used the dmaound drivers that came with the benh kernel. these
give me working volume control, separate for laptop speakers and lineout
and also work well with this handy util:
http://www.cymes.de/members/joker/projects/pbbuttons/pbbuttons.html
which lets the special volume control keys on my keybooard adjust and
mute the volume on the laptop speakers just like in wacos.
now to get some synths going....
