No, deleting it would be rather pointless as alsamixer uses
ncurses. But the ncurses lib probably comes with your
distribution, just install it and this should work.
Alternatively, you could try to get along without
alsamixer and use some other mixer (maybe there's one in
the tools-package for your card). Installing ncurses
shouldn't be a problem though.
