There is usually only a Roland UM-1G as an additional midi device. The
Edirol UA-5 I mentioned earlier has midi, too, but is typically powered
off/not connected. When I checked with UM-1G and UA-5 disconnected it
made no difference. Unplugging the Axe-Fx II led to the error message again.
The soundcards have fixed card numbers. This is the content of

The Axe-Fx II has midi-over-USB and also a "classical" midi interface
with in and out/thru ports featuring DIN connectors. There is a further
connector (called MFC port) for a proprietary connection to a midi foot
controller (MFC) of the same manufacturer. The MFC port can be used to
sent and receive data to and from the midi foot controller. Midi data
from the MFC is forwarded to the midi out DIN connector, midi data at
the midi in DIN connector is forwared to the MFC.
The midi-over-USB data can be routed by a software "switch" to the DIN
connectors and the MFC port: data at the midi in port (DIN connector) is
forwarded to the midi-over-USB; data coming in over midi-over-USB would
be forwarded to the midi out port (DIN connector). This applies also to
the data coming from and going to the MFC port which is tied to the
"classical" midi ports.
