I recently built a new system with a Gigabyte Z170X Gaming 7
motherboard. This has the built-in Intel HDA with two codecs: One for
the onboard HDMI, and one for the rest of the audio ports. (optical
SPDIF, line out, HP, Mic, etc.)
The analog/spdif part of the chipset is a Creative CA0132, which is
detected. All the mixer settings appear in alsamixer, including the DSP
toys for changing mic input. However, the thing won't produce or record
any sound from any port that I can tell. I'd really like to get the
spdif out working, as well as hopefully mic input.
I used alsamixer to select the card and made sure all the SPDIF ports
that appeared there were turned on. I also made sure this wasn't a
pulse problem
by running "pasuspender -- vlc", configuring it to use alsa, and telling
it to use the ca0132 spdif output. No joy.
The output of "alsactl store" shows all the mixer settings, including
the DSP settings for "Crystalvoice". So it is especially frustrating
that there just isn't any sound.
Googling around gave me some possible fixes, but they don't work. In my
/etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf:
options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 power_save=0
...doesn't seem to have helped.

This motherboard disables on onboard Intel video when one plugs in a
discrete video card. I'm wondering if Linux is thinking this is some
kind of Optimus/Bumblebee setup, and is intentionally disabling the
audio too. (As that log message would seem to suggest.) I tried
hand-editing where that driver message appears, and having the driver
not flip that bit, but that doesn't seem to have worked, either. (Which
is too bad, I was hoping that would be a quick fix that I could report.)
