aumix is for the kernel OSS/Free drivers.
try alsamixer (ncurses(?) interface) or amixer (command line).
Do:
man alsamixer
or
man amixer
for the manual pages for these two utilities.
You will need to have compiled and installed the alsa-utils-<version
number> package along with the libraries and drivers.
