There is a bug in ALSA 0.5.11 regarding ac97 power register.
On some notebooks the amplifier is kept down so no sounds come out.
Please try to grab the latest 0.5.x source via cvs (with
-rver-0-5-patches) or get the patch tarball from the following:
        ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/people/tiwai/patches/patches-alsa-0.5.11.tar.bz2

Or, of course, you can try ALSA 0.9.0 (preferably via cvs, too).
