Hey there,

I'm having a bit of a problem with ALSA on my Compaq Presario 1247, which
uses the VIA 686a sound chipset. Even after enabling the modules, and
making sure the volume controls were unmuted and up to an acceptable level
using alsamixer, I cannot play any sound files. The PC speaker works, and
I can play CD audio, but whenever I try to play sound files using play or
mpg123, it just freezes with no error message. I'm currently running
Slackware Linux 8.0 w/ kernel 2.4.14, with the latest stable ALSA drivers,
libraries, and utilities. In /etc/rc.d/rc.modules, I have lines for
"modprobe snd-card-via686a" and "modprobe snd-pcm-oss". PCM and other
audio channels are unmuted and full volume.

My /etc/modules.conf is as follows:

# ALSA portion
alias char-major-116 snd
alias snd-card-0 snd-card-via686a
# OSS/Free portion
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
keep

The results of lsmod are as follows:

Module Size Used by
snd-pcm-oss 17792 1
snd-pcm-plugin 13808 0 [snd-pcm-oss]

snd-seq-device 3520 0 [snd-rawmidi]
snd 29712 1 [snd-pcm-oss snd-pcm-plugin snd-mixer-oss
snd-card-via686a snd-pcm snd-timer snd-ac97-codec snd-mixer snd-mpu401-uart
snd-rawmidi snd-seq-device]
soundcore 3248 4 [snd]

I'm pretty sure I missed something fairly stupid... if anyone has any ideas
and can let me know what I'm doing wrong, please let me know. :) I don't
wanna have to go back to Windows 98 SE (which I know has working sound). :(

Thanks in advance...
