Any hints of getting the Audiophile 2496 to work with alsa? I just got one

($149 from Guitar Center) but have not been able to get things working.
I started out with 0.5.12. No trouble loading the ice1712 module, but no
sound either. amixer, alsamixer, and envy24control all seemed to be able
to display something that looked somewhat sensible, but nothing I tried
got any sound to come out. In looking back through the alsa-user
archives, I read some messages about the 2496 -> OSS emulation (among
other things) being problematic because of the multichannel nature of
ice1712, so I decided to try 0.9.0beta9. Still no problem loading the
modules and getting the card recognized, but using anything that talks
to it (alsamixer and esp. envy24control) causes the computer to
completely freeze, I can't even telnet into it. So I would greatly
appreciate any pointers regarding:
1) making sure one version of alsa is completely removed before
installing another.
2) any specific hints regarding the Audiophile 2496

BTW, I also have a AudioPCI card in the machine and in all the versions
of alsa mentioned about, it works perfectly. So I have no trouble
getting sound out of my machine, just out of the Audiophile 2496.

Thanks,
DanZ
