I'm trying to install Alsa 0.9beta4 on Debian Woody.

So far, I've successfully installed the .deb alsa-source packages, run
alsaconf and update-modules to update /etc/modules.conf. If I lsmod, I see
what appears to be all the right modules listed. If I cat /proc/interrupts,
I don't have any sort of IRQ conflict and the listed IRQ matches what's in
modules.conf. I can successfully start and stop alsa using /etc/init.d/alsa

But, when I try to run amixer (via alsaconf) to adjust the volumes, I get the
following:

Loading driver:
Starting ALSA sound driver (version 0.9.0beta4): cs4236.
alsactl not found, mixer settings will not be restored.
Setting the PCM volume to 100% and the Master output volume to 50%
amixer: Mixer 0/0 open error: No such file or directory

Could not initialize the mixer, the card was probably
not detected correctly.

I've no idea what could be wrong -- any help?
