ok, I've got the modules loading and I got aplay, alsamixer, amixer and
envy24control working - BUT things like XMMS don't work - not even through
ESD nor OSS

I'm using 2.4.14 kernel and 0.9.0beta10 for all alsa stuff

my modules.conf is like:

# ALSA portion
alias char-major-116 snd
# OSS/Free portion
alias char-major-14 soundcore

# ALSA portion
alias snd-card-0 snd-card-ice1712
# OSS/Free portion
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0

/proc/asound/sndstat says:
Sound Driver:3.8.1a-980706 (ALSA v0.9.0beta10 emulation code)
Kernel: Linux immortal 2.4.14 #3 Sat Dec 1 08:33:25 CET 2001 i686

and lsmod says:

(at this time esd had ran, and been killed and /dev/dsp was 'busy') but
anyway, after modprobeing snd-pcm-oss, running esd - it was possible to
press play in xmms, but it just hang ...

please help me... I've been up in all night (it's 8 or 9 now) and still
thinks are not smooth :(((((

I have not btw compiled the alsa-oss-0.9.0beta10 as 'make install' for it
seems broken:

Makefile:426: warning: overriding commands for target `aoss'
Makefile:137: warning: ignoring old commands for target `aoss'
make: *** No rule to make target `aoss.1', needed by `all-am'. Stop.
