Hello All, I have tried both the 0.5 and the 0.9 drivers with approximately the same result: very noisy or scatchy sound. I believe this issue has been mentioned in prior months on this list, but I will go over it again.
Essentially the sound quality is distorted. The driver itself does load and there are no issues actually getting a sound file to play; it's the resultant output which is problematic. Both the oss and the native interfaces are affected. The problem is not constant. By this I mean that I have heard 'clean' sound from both versions of the driver: once with the 0.5 version, and a few times with the 0.9 version. Most often, however, the sound quality is distorted. If the quality was 'clean' for one file, it was likely distorted for the next file. Very strange. The files I played were all sampled at 44100 Hz. Some were PCM wav files, some were mp3, some were mp2. Software I used was aplay, mpg123, and mplayer. I notice that the mixer options vary with the version of the driver used. The 0.9 driver seems to 'better' support this chipset, but that only means that the options available in the mixer more reflect the options available under Windows. Here are some questions that I have: 1. I read in the OSS documentation for this chipset that the hardware may be 'locked' at 48000 Hz, and that the software may need to perform sample rate conversions because the hardware cannot do it. What exactly does this mean? Might this be the cause of the distorted sound? 2. My /etc/modules.conf simply mimics the suggested settings as found in the INSTALL file, modified for the snd-card-via8233 driver. Could the problem originate in some special parameter or flag that needs to be passed to the driver? 3. Has anyone actually gotten this chipset to work with the ALSA drivers? I know that the chipset is a revision to the KT266, so perhaps the KT266A chipset on these motherboards has a slightly different 8233 sound interface? 4. Why would the sound quality be 'clean' at least part of the time? This is very odd to me. 5. What is the difference between the 'Master' and the 'Master Mono' channels in the mixer? The latter seems to have no affect on the sound volume. 6. What other documentation or resources might I look at, especially as regards the /proc interface. Could there be some tweak here that needs to be performed? Thanks for any information or suggestions!
