Running 0.9+0beta9 on linux kernel 2.4.16, with a YMFPCI card, I can
play back sound files and hear videos, etc., using common programs like
XMMS and Xine. However this is only true if I select OSS as the audio
driver. None of the programs would work if I specifically invoked alsa
(in xine, for example, by typing "xine -A alsa09"). Since this behavior
affects several other programs, I am convinced this is an alsa
configuration problem.

Interestingly also, I can't get any of the alsa utitlites, except for
alsamixer, to work. I typically get the following error using aplay
(using various combinations of options).

$ aplay Nelly_Furtado_-_Like_a_Bird.wav
ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:598:(snd_pcm_hw_open) SNDRV_PCM_IOCTL_PVERSION
failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device
aplay: main:445: audio open error: Inappropriate ioctl for device

Any ideas?
