Maybe you're using devfs and haven't edited /etc/devfsd.conf according to the 
instructions in the INSTALL file in the alsa-driver directory? I would try
to use an OSS/Free mixer (eg the standard sound mixer in KDE or gnome) to
raise volumes and unmute the relevant channels. HTH,
