Thanks to everyone for all the help and suggestions. To get things working I reinstalled the v0.5.12a alsa drivers and I noticed that "card config" in /proc/asound/sndstat started showing my card. I could have sworn it didn't when I tried out the .5.12a driver yesterday (los Chaneques or gremlins I guess).
Anyway, amixer was still giving me an error, but I rebooted and that went away. Then the gnome mixer was giving me an error, but I ran esd as root and the gnome mixer started working as well. I have no idea why it works now and not before, but the sound quality is great so I'm declaring success!
