I have a cmi 8738 card also and am experiencing the same behavior, noise from
spdif, though I haven't grabbed anything from CVS yet. Nor have I tried the
kernel drivers.

I'm also trying to get ac3 direct over the spdif working, I try

(22:31)% /usr/src/alsa/alsa-tools-0.9.0beta10/ac3dec/ac3dec -C ac3test.ac3
AC3 Stream 48.0 KHz 448 kbps

No sound, my receiver doesn't even recognize it as an ac3 stream.

When I hit ^C it gives the errors:

ALSA lib pcm_hw.c:278:(snd_pcm_hw_drain) SNDRV_PCM_IOCTL_DRAIN failed:
Input/output error
ac3dec: pcm.c:210: snd_pcm_hw_free: Assertion `snd_pcm_state(pcm) ==
SND_PCM_STATE_SETUP || snd_pcm_state(pcm) == SND_PCM_STATE_PREPARED' failed.
Aborted...
Quit

At which point I have hit ^\ to get a prompt back.

Thought my experience might be useful, but it looks like you guys are doing
fine, I'll pay attention, let me know if you'd like me try something.
