The kernel you are using is missing the basic sound support, that's
required for ALSA to work. If you compile your own kernel, make sure
that sound support is checked. If you are using your distibution's
kernel, you might want to look into another kernel from your
distribution. I think, a kernel image without basic sound support should
be considered broken ;)
