A quick note on using the S/PDIF output on CS4237B soundcards:

I just tried it for the first time, using ALSA CVS. It works - BUT
you have to do something kinda funny in alsamixer:

   * Unmute "IEC958 Output Enable"

   * Unmute "3D Control - IEC958". I have no idea why this is
     necessary; it should toggle the stupid 3D effect on the S/PDIF
     output, but it doesn't. Instead it seems to be a second output
     enable button. Nothing happens unless this is enabled.
     While we're at it, unless you like weird fake
     spatial effects and a cruddy noise floor, make sure to mute the
     "3D Control - Switch".

   * If your sound source is PCM (i.e from a softsynth, mp3 player,
     whatever), unmute and turn up the PCM level. It seems to be OK to
     go all the way up, so you probably should, in order to get the
     maximum available resolution.

   * The "Master Digital" level doesn't matter; it can be muted.
