Hello,

I am the proud owner of an Opti931 sound card. ;)
It's been giving me trouble for a while now, but I
_really_ want to fix it.  Demo OSS/Linux works OK;
I never could get OSS/Free or kernel drivers working.
This is unusual; I'm fairly experienced and have no
other current problems with my system, which I built
and configured. (which is to say I'm not a new user)

I've been keeping track of the alsa-project for a while.
Many messages found in a Google search refer to the Opti93x
driver being rewritten; I was waiting for an announcement, but
it's been months! Is this still in progress, or is the
driver at its finished state, in the development or
stable releases? Such messages are usually from around
late 1999. This is why I am curious.

I'm running Slackware 8, with a 2.4.5 kernel. I have
installed a Riva128 AGP, 64M ram, the OPTi, and a 3c503
card.

isapnp (pnpdump) reports it as an "OPT0931".
module isapnp reports it as an "Opti Audio 16".
from past usage, I've found that it's a 931 with hardware
    revision 1.1, not 0.1.

The current development packages always produce a "Opti93x
card not found" (or similar) after the PnP detection by module
isapnp is successful. I can't seem to disable isapnp for the
development driver.

The current stable packages appear to work, but amixer says,
"ALSA driver not found in this system".
No combination of IRQ, IO, and DMA values passed to modprobe
changes this result.

Is it necessary to use an isapnp.conf
file, or not? Must the OPTi82C931 program be used to pre-
configure the card for non-pnp, or will the ALSA drivers work
in pnp-mode with a v1.1 card? There are too many variables
here, and I have no idea how the information I've collected
relates to the ALSA driver. It's generally for OSS/Free.

And, could anyone tell me whether I should be using the 0.9 beta
or 0.5 stable with an Opti?

I'm not giving up on this chip! :)
If anyone can help, it won't be a waste of time!
If and when I do get sound, I'll document my steps
for other 82C931 v1.1 users, and put it online - you can
hold me to it.

Thanks all!
