(note that I messed up and sent this to alsa-howto before I read the "please send it to alsa-user instead". my apologies)
I suggest that the ALSA FAQ and HOWTO documentation be amended to make note of this fact. It appears as if Slackware 8.0 (and possibly many other Linux distributions) ship with kernel source that indicates SMP is enabled (in autoconf.h) although the binary is not an SMP kernel. The net result is a very strange symbol error when trying to modprobe snd-timer.o. It took a few hours of digging to discover this apparent problem, and as such, I'd love to share my findings with you guys to make sure others like me who might not be as apt will still be able to use ALSA.
