Hi,

I am on RedHat 7.1, sound interface on motherboard Via Technologies
VT86C686.

My problems started when I wanted some videoconference and installed
GnomeMeeting. Prior to this I used OSS modules in the kernel. But I was
not able to input sound from microphone, so I was told to migrate
towards ALSA.

After installing ALSA I was able to record sound properly, but I learn
to keep an eye on the mixer settings. I was told to unmute my settings,
which I did: I placed the 'audunmute' in rc.local. The settings are
overwritten at boot time by KDE and I'm not able to find out where this
KDE (artsd?) take its settings from (it's not /etc/.aumixrc as I thought
at a moment).

But the biggest problem is that my mixer settings go on zero (all to
minimum) when I start applications sometimes (it happened after
ymessenger, gnomemeeting, even Netscape or kppp, so I took the
conclusion that it's not about a specific application, but something
more general).

As I told you I learned to keep an eye on my settings (run aumix from
time to time) and about once in a couple of hours session I find my
mixer with all zeroes. Run audunmute manually and everything is ok, but
I can't continue like this.

Any idea about what it's happening here?

Thank you, Adrian
