Greg, I too have had trouble with the Intel 8x0 driver. I have two suggestions. First, the volume for the sound output is actually "headphone", not master. I've had good luck with both "master" and "headphone" enabled.
I experienced another issue where the driver would not load up if there was nothing plugged into the sound out port. The chipset would literally disable itself. Hope this helps, Erik.
